The crew from Troop 688 just returned from Northern Tier and it was very rewarding. Flying into Minneapolis on Sunday and driving 5 hours to Ely was enjoyable and quickly got us acclimated to the conditions, or so we thought. Upon arrival we met our guide Arik and started the in-processing. After picking up tons of cold weather gear, we ate, went to a meeting then off to bed.

Unseasonably warm temperatures, sunshine, and a full-course turkey dinner all contributed to a fantastic camping trip for Troop 688 over the weekend of November 20-22, 2009. This annual trip is always a popular one, and this year 42 Scouts spent the weekend at Camp Wilson located in nearby Pohick Bay Regional Park.

Twenty-nine Scouts and seven adults from BSA Troop 688 braved mid-December’s below normal temperatures and headed south to Fort A. P. Hill near Bowling Green, Virginia, over the weekend of December 11-13, 2009. This annual camping trip is one of the Scouts’ favorites and has been nicknamed “Nosecones” because the Scouts spend two nights sleeping in B-52 bomber nosecones that the US Army has placed on a 200-acre section of the post where youth groups are allowed to camp. The Army once used the fiberglass nosecones to protect electronic equipment from the weather. Today, they look like 21st century tee-pees and provide the Scouts with a very unique shelter from the cold.

On November 14, 2009, forty-five Scouts and family members participated in BSA’s annual food drive for local food pantries. As local Cub Scouts delivered bags of donated food to Christ Church, Scouts and family members sorted and boxed the food. The food was then delivered to the Lorton Community Action Center where it was weighted and then transferred to the basement and storage sheds. Troop 688 delivered over 3,100 lbs of food to LCAC.
