FUN was had by all.
This trip was somewhat different from others in that there was no set skill training just a relaxing campout focused on fun (sports & amusement rides).
We had lots of last minute changes on the roster for this trip but we made it work. 47 Scouts and 6 Adult attended and camped.
Friday we arrived at Kings Dominion about 7PM so the Scouts got to put up their tents in the Daylight -- a rarity.
Saturday morning breakfast meals varied but their were some that were quite impressive. After a slow start on getting organized the Scouts and their adult supervision headed off to the park.
The Scouts were in the park from 10AM to just before 10PM so there was plenty of time to have their fill of twisting rollercoasters, drinks and food, and games of skill or chance depending on how you look at it--although I did see quite a few large stuffed animals and various other treasures. The day was sunny and about 90 degrees, but we did have a front come through which cooled off the temperatures and luckily there was no rain -- another rarity for a Troop 688 trip.
Sunday morning we were up at 6:30 ate breakfast and then took off at 8:35.
All had a wonderful time -- but the leaders made trip possible and enjoyable.
First, our trip SPL did a tremendous job. He, as many before him, now knows how difficult it is at times to get the Scouts to listen and do what is required.
Many adults contributed in a variety of roles: getting the trailer paperwork in order, pulling the trailer to and from the camp, providing the Adults with plenty of great food, volunteering to drive to and from the campground, and supporting throughout the weekend and supervising the Scouts in the Park-- I hear some even went on a few rides. We all thank you for your support.
Lessons Learned:
1. Check the Totes before loading -- one was full of mold and unusable.
2. There is a reason that the Troop policy is no large tents and a max of 3 Scouts per tent.
3. Scouts always need to anchor the tents down no matter what size.... you never know when a wind squall will come through the camp.

On March 20, 2010, Troop 688 delivered over 8,400 bags of mulch in its annual fund raiser. That number is a new troop record. At approximately 40 pounds per bag that is over 168 TONS of mulch – all delivered on one day – also a record – using 8 rented trucks and several pickup trucks. Scouts not only earn money for the troop’s general account, but also earn money for their private accounts that can be used to pay for activities throughout the year. |

On March 14, 2010, Boy Scouts of America Troop 688 celebrated the 100th anniversary of Scouting in America with a dinner for the Scouts and their families. Over 170 people attended the gala event held at Christ Church in Fairfax Station. Former leaders of the troop and everyone who had earned the rank of Eagle while in Troop 688 were invited and recognized at this centennial celebration.
Several Scouts presented the evening program, serving as Master of Ceremonies, speaking on the history of the Boy Scouts of America and presenting a slide show on the troop’s activities in 2009. ASM Quigley solicted donations for the annual “Friends of Scouting” fund drive, and troop Committee Chair Kidd presented a check from the Committee to “prime the pump.” Outgoing Scoutmaster Ryan said his farewell and introduced incoming Scoutmaster Sciacca.
The dessert cakes were cut by Troop 688’s oldest and youngest Scouts. They personified the anniversary’s slogan, “Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey.”
The Boy Scouts of America was founded on Feb 8, 1910. Our celebration was originally schedule for the evening of Feb 8, 2010; however, the February’s record snowfalls forced the event to be postponed until March.
